I’m trying to make time each day for a long read, and this Esquire brilliance by Chris Jones on the Zanesville animal escape made my heart race.
It is pretty and scary at the same time — my favourite.
Jones says he wanted to go to Zanesville from the start, but even though the story was being covered to the hilt, he was never discouraged: “The real story sometimes gets lost.”
“Everybody I talked to in the days and weeks after seemed to know the outline of it: Terry Thompson had released fifty of his exotic animals — lions, tigers, bears, wolves, monkeys — before shooting himself. Then the Zanesville police had hunted down the animals. But… what happened that night? I wanted to know what it was like to be a small-town Ohio cop creeping through the woods, with night falling and a storm blowing in, looking for tigers.”
