Yes, you read that correctly.

Breaking news scoop today: Jeremy Allan Steinke, aka Souleater, is trying to appeal his conviction on three counts of first-degree murder.

In his own handwriting (including a little x to dot the i like old times), Steinke, who turns 29 Sunday, says “it was an unreasonable verdict.”

Steinke, who changed his name to Jackson May in honour of his dying mother, Jackie, wants a new trial, and to be heard by judge alone. Since he testified on his own behalf at his 2008 triple murder trial, and the judge hasn’t been found to have made any errors, it’s doubtful the Alberta Court of Appeal would grant a hearing.

So… good luck with that.

By Sherri Zickefoose

Calgary Herald

Jan. 10, 2012

Three years after being convicted of slaughtering his underage girlfriend’s parents and eight-year-old brother, a Medicine Hat man says his guilty verdict is “unreasonable.”

Jeremy Allan Steinke is hoping for a new murder trial after filing an appeal of his 2008 conviction.

“It was an unreasonable verdict, I didn’t appeal sooner because I’m new to the system and did not know what I was doing, and at the time I could not find a lawyer who would take my case,” wrote Steinke, who was defended at his trial by high-profile criminal defence lawyer Alain Hepner through legal aid.

“Once my appeal is approved, I will contact legal aid so that they may cover the cost of the lawyer as I cannot afford one.”

Steinke, soon to be 29, is serving a life sentence in Edmonton Institution with no chance of parole for 25 years on three counts of first-degree murder in the April 23, 2006 stabbings.

The shocking case made headlines and history — Steinke’s accomplice was his 12-year-old girlfriend, whose conviction made her Canada’s youngest multiple killer.

Steinke and the girl had been carrying on their illicit romance for only a few months before her parents learned of it and tried to stop it.

The murder plan was hatched online and through phone calls. Through online messages under their user names “souleater” and “runaway devil,” the pair discussed killing the girl’s parents, who opposed the relationship between their 12-year-old daughter and Steinke, who was 23.

The girl, who cannot be named, was also convicted of three counts of first-degree murder.

She is now 18 and is now entering the final phase of a special rehabilitative youth sentence, which is gradual reintegration to society.

When she is 22, she will be free.

She was given the maximum youth sentence of 10 years which includes a four-phase program of stabilization, intensive therapy and transition.

Steinke admitted stabbing the girl’s parents to death, but not the boy. The girl denied any role in the killings.

Steinke, who was sentenced in December 2008, filed an appeal of his judge and jury conviction Jan. 17, 2011.

Normally, appeals are to be filed within 30 days of the court’s decision.

Steinke’s request will be heard by the Alberta Court of Appeal May 15. If his appeal is granted, he has requested to attend the hearing in person. If a new trial is ordered, he is asking to be tried by judge alone.

On the night of the killings, court heard the girl phoned Steinke, who arrived at the family’s darkened house, high on cocaine and drunk.

Both parents confronted Steinke, who was armed with knives. They bled to death in the basement.

Steinke said he never touched the boy upstairs but watched as the girl slit her brother’s throat.

Hours after the killings, the couple was seen kissing and giggling at a house party.

They were arrested with friends the next morning in Leader, Sask.

Steinke told an undercover police officer he tried to talk his girlfriend out of the deadly plan but she wouldn’t have it, and he was a man of his word.

In the days following their arrest, the couple agreed to marry through prison love letters, but the relationship quickly crumbled when they blamed each other for the boy’s stabbing death.

*Law and Order sound effect here.

A MOTHER’S GRIEF, PART 1

UPDATE: during a routine check of his halfway house room, Smeltzer was caught with a “sexually explicit” DVD movie he purchased while he was first on day parole because he “liked the actress.”

It took a few years of freedom, the death of his mother and sister, and a public outing to crack Harold Smeltzer.

I first wrote about the release of convicted Calgary child killer and southwest neighbourhood rapist here, the result of nearly two years of sleuthing to find sources and unnamed victims of sex assault.

Giving them a voice was the goal. Their message was loud and clear: Harold Smeltzer is a dangerous man who should remain behind bars. For the record, he served his entire life sentence for first-degree murder and rape.

Day parole was another step towards freedom, however, convicted murderers are monitored for life.

Now, as we await details of what exactly prompted Smeltzer’s parole officer to take action on Friday, we have a few ideas of what may be going on.

As you can read below in my story today, the National Parole Board has already noted Smeltzer’s struggles on the outside. His requests for unescorted bus rides back to Prince Albert to visit friends were turned down. His attempts at privacy are clearly on someone’s radar.

He may have breached his conditions, which include steering clear of parks, playgrounds, basically anywhere there are children.

We also wonder if Smeltzer deliberately breached because he is struggling on the outside due to all the publicity of his release. He has never gained employment, and if you add that to his relatively low IQ, he’s not making great strides at self-sufficiency.

We will know more details officially Monday.

But who can wait? Tell what you know.

SHERRI ZICKEFOOSE

CALGARY HERALD

JAN. 7, 2012

A Calgary child killer and rapist is back behind bars after having day parole revoked.

Harold David Smeltzer was taken into custody by police in Regina Friday afternoon.

“His parole officer directed revocation of his day parole and a warrant for his arrest was issued,” said Regina Police Service Staff Sgt. Brent Ermel, adding Smeltzer is in custody at the Provincial Correctional Centre.

“I can’t tell you for long or what is going to happen with him next.”

Smeltzer is serving a life sentence for murdering his five-year-old Calgary neighbour, Kimberley Thompson, in 1980.

Evelyn Thompson, Kimberley’s mother, was alerted by Correctional Service of Canada officials following his arrest.

“I’m very happy with the news but I’m just afraid he’s hurt somebody else, and that’s a sad thing,” she said from her Vancouver Island home. “I hope it’s forever that he doesn’t go back outside.”

Several Calgary relatives were also grappling with the news Friday.

Ermel said Regina police were planning to release more information Monday.

Smeltzer was noted to have been struggling with restrictions placed on him, according to the National Parole Board’s report last summer.

Publicity about his past has led to anxiety and frustration because no one will hire him, the board wrote. The 55-year-old never found steady employment since being released to a halfway house in late 2008 after serving 28 years in prison in Saskatchewan. He was earning an allowance for custodial work at a community correctional centre.

Smeltzer had been given a cellphone by volunteers who work with high-risk, high-needs sex offenders.

Smeltzer was allowed to leave his halfway house unescorted, provided he stay away from children. Smeltzer is not allowed near parks, swimming pools, schools and other gathering places.

He must return to the halfway house nightly.

Smeltzer is a pedophile with an anti-social personality disorder, according to the parole board.

In January 1980, Smeltzer abducted Kimberley as she was walking to kindergarten on an Altadore street in Calgary. He said he intended to sexually assault her, but she recognized him, so he drowned her and stuffed her body into a garbage can.

Smeltzer has admitted attacking nearly 40 girls and women during a five-year reign of terror in the Altadore and South Calgary area.

There’s more to the story about convicted killer Ryan Jason Love and his bid for parole.

For years, I’ve been waiting for news of his date with the National Parole Board. Not in some schadenfreude kind of way, but from my stint as editor of The Banff Crag & Canyon (before it was gutted and reduced to pap by its current publisher).

The crime was at the top of my list for compelling stories. Love and Lucie Turmel appeared to be leading such parallel lives. Close in age, both drawn to the beauty of the Rockies, longing for adventure and working unglamourous jobs to earn their keep. I wrote about the 10th anniversary of Lucie’s death, and I was astonished to learn many were still grieving. (Lucie’s beau kindly acquieced to an interview with me. After a decade, he still had a green garbage bag stuffed with newspapers — not clippings of the murder coverage, mind you, but whole sections of newspapers. He just felt compelled to collect them and couldn’t face the heartbreaking task of becoming the archivist of her death.)

Love was 18 years old when he robbed and stabbed 23-year-old Banff cabbie Lucie Turmel May 17, 1990. He was convicted of second-degree murder and sent to prison at age 22. He turns 40 at the end of September.

While he’s been locked up, Love has made many forward strides. He’s edited the prison magazine/newsletter, and come up through the ranks of William Head on Stage, a behind-bars theatre troupe. He’s written at least one play, garnered glowing reviews for acting, joined the theatre’s board of directors, and took the reigns as theatre manager. He’s given thoughtful and articulate interviews to the press about the benefits theatre offers inmates.

Love entered prison a wild child. Alcohol and drugs clouded his ways and days leading up to the murder. He was a high school dropout who quickly warmed to undercover officers posing as criminals. He was quick to accept their offer to act as lookout for a phony heist on the Sunshine Coast.

With the passing of two decades, there’s every chance that Love has grown up in prison and is ready to rejoin society.

But some will always wonder if it’s all just an act.

In an infamous interview with the National Post in 2000, Love — who was later unhappy with it, calling it a partial quote — claimed the theatre experience was “amazing:” “I’m supposed to be punished here and I think a lot of people might be upset because I’m having the time of my life.”

The quote caused an uproar.

But what struck me as more interesting was his claim that after serving eight years in prison (he was 28 year old at the time), he was uncomfortable around civilians: “My social skills are not yet up to par. I’m institutionalized. I’m introverted.”

What he meant was that he was afflicted with institutional syndrome; deprived of independence and responsibility and thus unable to function in the outside world.

It smacks of manipulation. It would take a lot longer than eight years – and those decades would have to be spent doing hard time – for that claim to be believable. If Love was having problems, they were surely pre-existing anti-social disorders.

His cool return to Banff in the days following the murder says more about a manipulative mind.

I am travelling to William Head Institution to cover the parole hearing. It will be interesting to see who Ryan Jason Love has become, and to learn what the future holds for him.

News that Calgary child-killer Harold Smeltzer is having a tough go of it on day parole has rankled readers.

They’re angry that he’s on continued day parole — but that’s not what the Smeltzer story is really about.

Smeltzer is still serving his life sentence. He lives in a halfway house in Regina. He’s free to come and go in the daytime, provided he stays away from parks, malls and schools — any place children might be. (Never mind the fact that Smeltzer, who murdered 5-year-old Kimmie Thompson, was an equal opportunity rapist of both women and children.)

The issue is not that Smeltzer is on day parole but rather what the system is prepared to do with him for the rest of his life.

Now 55, Smeltzer remains low-functioning. No one in Regina will hire him (a combination of his lack of employable skills and a firestorm of publicity surrounding his forgotten case, courtesy of moi).

Unemployed, he spends his days earning an allowance by acting as a janitor for the corrections facility.

But how far is Corrections prepared to go? How long will they nanny Smeltzer — a child killer and rapist who suffers from anti-social personality disorder?

Is the corrections/parole system designed to babysit offenders at risk to reoffend for life? Will Smeltzer live out his days mopping floors and emptying trash cans for them?

It doesn’t seem like much of a solution. It appears they don’t know what the hell to do with him.

The publicity surrounding Smeltzer’s case has outed him to a community that shuns him. His sole supporting relative — a beloved sister who continued to take his phone calls — died a few months ago. His support volunteers have given him a cell phone so he can call when he needs them, given his “frustration.”

This is not the kind of guy capable of turning over a new leaf. It’s a sickening, dark reality that at best, Smeltzer will wrestle with his pedophilic urges internally. And that’s quite a risk for society to endure.

A Calgary child killer on day parole in Regina has been given a cellphone by volunteers so he can reach out to them for support.

Life in a halfway house isn’t easy for Harold David Smeltzer, who is serving a life sentence for murdering his five-year-old Calgary neighbour, Kimberley Thompson, in 1980.

Publicity about his past has led to anxiety and frustration because no one will hire him, according to the National Parole Board.

The 55-year-old has yet to find employment since being released to a halfway house in December 2008 after serving 28 years in custody in Saskatchewan.

He earns an allowance for custodial work at the local community correctional centre.

Smeltzer has earned another six months of freedom in a halfway house, the National Parole Board ruled June 6.

There have been no incidents with Smeltzer, who has strict conditions to stay away from children and have near daily contact with police.

Smeltzer has been given a cellphone by volunteers who work with high-risk, high-needs sex offenders released at warrant expiry into communities across Canada.

His contacts from Circle of Support and Accountability want him to be able to immediately contact them if he has “immediate concerns” to discuss, according to the parole board.

He is allowed to leave his halfway house unescorted, provided he stays away from children. Smeltzer is not allowed near parks, swimming pools, schools and other gathering places.

He must return to the halfway house nightly.

Smeltzer is a pedophile with an anti-social personality disorder, according to the board.

In January 1980, Smeltzer abducted five-year-old Kimberley Thompson as she was walking to kindergarten on an Altadore street in Calgary.

He said he intended to sexually assault her, but she recognized him, so he drowned her and stuffed her body into a garbage can.

Five months later, he was arrested for the murder after an 11-year-old girl he’d recently raped spotted him walking on Elbow Drive.

Smeltzer has admitted attacking nearly 40 girls and women during a five-year reign of terror in the Altadore and South Calgary area.

He was convicted of first-degree murder, two rapes and two attempted rapes.

Unsolved murders still haunt families and police; After years of police work by a task force that spent millions, families of missing Calgary women still hold out hope for justice
Sherri Zickefoose
Calgary Herald
May 15 2011

After his mother was stabbed to death and dumped outside the city’s northeastern limits near Garden Road, Mitchell Maunder couldn’t bear the thought of her killer walking free.

He was only 11 years old when 26-year-old Tracey Lynn Maunder disappeared off the city’s downtown stroll in October 1992.

When no arrests were made, Mitchell launched an investigation of his own.

“I took it upon myself to look for answers at (the age of) 15. I wasn’t taking no for an answer; I investigated myself,” said Mitchell, now 30.

The determined teenager hit the streets, pointedly questioning those who swirled in the dark and dangerous world of cocaine trafficking and prostitution.

“I was more careless at that age, so I didn’t care about what happened to me. I just went to everybody who I thought could have been involved and I just started asking questions,” he said. “I didn’t have a childhood; it made me an adult.”

Mitchell’s sleuthing through the years leads him to believe his mother, who had only been in the city for a few weeks, knew her killers.

But 20 years later, without witnesses, a confession or arrests, Mitchell won’t see justice anytime soon.

“The bottom line is, that was my mother. I don’t know what’s going on with her case.”

Maunder’s 1992 cold case is one of many unsolved murders of young women during two of the worst sprees in our city’s history.

Four women met a sinister end between 1976 and 1977. Ten more females were found slain between 1986 and 1993.

Some were street teens, others worked in the sex trade. Although police ruled out the murders being the work of a single serial killer long ago, the cold cases remain in a deep freeze.

In the decades that have passed since the battered bodies of young women began cropping up on the city’s outskirts, there have been few answers to the troubling mysteries.

The cases, mostly under RCMP investigation, have been passed on to a variety of new investigators looking for loose ends.

Hope for resolution rose in 2003 when more than a dozen unsolved Calgary-area cases were forwarded to Project Kare -a Mountie-led joint task force originally set up to examine the deaths of several women whose bodies were found in rural areas surrounding Edmonton.

The project has expanded its mandate to include cases of murdered or missing high-risk victims from all parts of Alberta, including Calgary.

Despite its solid successes -the conviction of serial killer Thomas Svekla, two more suspects awaiting trial and a grid search last week for evidence in an Edmonton park -similar Calgary-area slayings of high-risk victims remain unsolved.

It’s not for lack of resources. Since 2006 -the year Svekla was arrested for murder -Project Kare has received more than $16.8 million in funding under the provincial policing service agreement. And the task force assures the dearth of convictions is also not due to a lack of effort.

“All the files within the Project Kare mandate are actively worked on throughout the province,” said RCMP Sgt. Val Lahaie, who heads up the task force.

“These investigations take us to many places all over Canada. It’s important for people to remember that these cases were already thoroughly investigated by competent investigators. It’s our job to go through them for things that may have been missed and analyze the information to see if there are any new strategies to help zero in on the persons responsible. It’s not an easy job because, as I’ve said, they were thoroughly investigated by competent homicide investigators in the first instance.”

Through the decades, homicide investigators claim they have been stymied by court acquittals, suicide, jailed suspects and time itself as victims’ decomposed remains were devoid of crucial forensic evidence.

“Investigators went to the ends of the earth,” said Calgary RCMP major crimes Sgt. Sandy White.

But due to a lack of manpower, investigators must turn their focus to fresh cases as they crop up.

“One of my big hopes is that we’ll get a large cold case unit soon: one in the north and one in the south,” said White.

“If you have that, you need resources to supplement that. With advances in forensics, we have the eliminator now with DNA.

“It’s only a matter of time.”

But too much time has already passed without convictions, say victims’ advocates.

“I can’t say that all those millions and one conviction sounds like a really good ratio to me. Is everything that could be done being done to solve those cases?” asks Suzanne Dzus, who heads Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women Calgary.

She wonders how much effort is being expended on unsolved cases of marginalized local women.

“It doesn’t look like it. Although the database is really wonderful, it’s not solving cases.”

Families who lost loved ones remain frustrated by the lack of progress.

“I gave up a long time ago that they would ever really find anybody,” said Jim Rehorek, whose older sister, Melissa Ann Rehorek, was found murdered outside the city on Sept. 16, 1976.

“After a while you start to think ‘What are the odds?’ “

The 20-year-old chambermaid’s fully clothed body was dumped in a ditch about 20 kilometres west of Calgary near the TransCanada Highway. She had been strangled.

Friends said she set off to hitchhike her way to the mountains.

RCMP investigators suspect her killer might be the same man who strangled Barbara Jean MacLean five months later.

The cases remained stalled until an Edmonton sex offender committed suicide in 1994. That caught the attention of homicide detectives here.

Gary McAstocker, 34, hanged himself hours before he was to be questioned by police regarding the murder of a 14-year-old Edmonton girl.

He had just been released from prison after serving an 11-year sentence for a 1982 rape and a subsequent sexual assault committed while on parole in 1988.

McAstocker was a person of interest in MacLean’s murder, and was also reportedly the prime suspect in the Aug. 2, 1976, murder of an Edmonton teenager, Marie Judy Goudreau, 17.

MacLean and Goudreau were both sexually assaulted and strangled.

McAstocker had been working for an Edmontonbased moving company and was in Calgary at the time MacLean was killed.

The firm’s employees often stayed at the Highlander Motor Hotel when in town. MacLean disappeared from the motel’s parking lot.

Now, 35 years later, Rehorek’s family members say it’s doubtful anyone will pay for the crime.

“I have some sympathy for the police. It’s going back a long ways,” said Rehorek.

Police were equally frustrated by the acquittals of three men charged with first-degree murder for separate killings, including that of 17-year-old Joanne Shaver in 1990.

Helen Shaver has all but given up hope her daughter’s killer will be found.

But she worries that others will fall victim to a killer on the loose.

“They were thinking that it was so well planned; he knew what he was doing.

They were thinking he had done this before,” said Shaver.

A troubled street teen, Joanne was easy prey. Her body was found dumped on the side of a remote country road on 88th Street S.E. near Sheppard Road on Jan. 10, 1990.

Police charged James Arthur Link with first-degree murder, but he was acquitted and it was upheld by a Supreme Court of Canada ruling.

Three of Shaver’s hairs were found in Link’s truck along with a fibre from her sweater, and a hair found on her sweater matched Link’s, but a Calgary judge ruled the Crown had failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Link strangled Shaver.

A week before Shaver was killed, Link had been released from jail after serving time for sexually assaulting a prostitute.

“Afterwards, the police said the case was closed. There was just not enough evidence,” said Shaver.

“But at the back of my mind, if not him, who is it?”

An inmate in a British Columbia prison serving a life sentence for murder knows the answer to the question families want answered.

Did he have a hand in the unsolved slaying of teenage Calgary girls?

The body of 16-year-old Jennifer Janz was unearthed Aug. 13, 1991, at a construction site off Valley Ridge Road near Canada Olympic Park. Jennifer Joyes, 17, was found two months later on Oct. 17, in a wooded area just west of the city.

The bodies had been dumped two kilometres apart.

When Keely Pincott’s remains were found in a shallow grave in 1992 and Rebecca Boutelier disappeared in February 1993, panic set in.

Experts from the RCMP and FBI were called upon to review the cases at a summit in 1993.

“I was satisfied there was a link in two of the Calgary cases,” said former investigator Ron McKay. “There was enough there to behaviourally link them.”

According to an expert who reviewed a series of unsolved Calgary homicide files from the 1990s, there’s a strong chance a B.C. convict serving a life sentence for killing a Vancouver sex trade worker struck here first.

Through the years, different investigators had various opinions of which victims may have been slain by the same killer.

“Now, with these Calgary cases from the ’80s and ’90s, there’s no suggestion that the offenders are currently active. Where do you find witnesses to support cases that old?” said McKay.

Relatives of Joyes fear her once high-profile case has slipped away from public memory.

“We thought we’d hear of more success. It seems so quiet,” said cousin Dawn Pepper.

“Unless there is a solid lead, we’re now looking at almost 20 years,” she said.

“We’re feeling on the periphery. Everything’s in the vault. We feel compelled to access more,” she said.

“Some of the emotion is reduced, now it’s information and knowledge that we seek. We’re simply not getting that.”

The Calgary Police Service has 85 unsolved homicides dating back to the early 1900s.

Detectives assigned to old cases cross-check them with new data and technology.

But human instinct is just as valuable.

“I still talk to the guys in the cold case squad regularly,” said Al Brown, a former homicide detective who retired in 2008.

“I phone the guys over there and say, ‘what about this,’ whenever things come to mind,” he said.

“You think about it all the time. Even when I’m in the southwest there’s a certain house I still drive by and think about it.”

Retirement hasn’t allowed Brown to close the books on unresolved cases. He estimates he investigated 120 homicide cases during his 29-year career.

“I know all those cases. And there’s always that thing in the back of everybody’s mind that doesn’t get documented in the files, just a feeling you have for the case.”

The grief suffered by victim’s families and the frustration of not solving the cases haunts him.

“You want to see justice be done for the family so they can have some kind of closure.

The family wants to know why something happened,” said Brown.

“Those old files didn’t get solved and not because of lack of work. We just didn’t get the right break.”

Acceptance that Tracey Maunder’s murderer will never go to jail is a long way off for her son.

“There’s a part of me that’s still really upset. It hurts me how torn up my grandmother is. All this money and the resources and technology can’t be applied to this case,” said Mitchell.

His mother’s murder took a heavy toll on the family and his efforts to investigate suspects mired in street life brought him close to the brink.

“Thank god I’m a good person; I could have gone one way or another,” he said.

“I took it upon myself to become a gentleman and a good person. I didn’t want to be a part of what took my mother out of this world.”

News today with the impending release of one of Eric Wong’s killers.

Three teens were involved in the callous killing of Wong, 42, who confronted them about the theft of his credit cards and cheque forgery.

They killed him over it.

After luring him into a car and driving out of city limits on Jan. 6, 2004, two of the 15-year-olds stabbed him repeatedly and left him to die in a snowy farmer’s field.

Then they brought their friends back to the scene of the crime to take turns seeing the dead body.

Now, the ringleader — who can only be identified by the initial P — has completed the custodial portion of his special 10-year youth sentence and can be freed under community supervision for the next four years.

P wants to live with one of his brothers and attend university. “I am doing good, I had some problems, but now I’m trying to concentrate on a career, education, plans and goals,” he told a judge.

“I have accepted my responsibility.”

Problem is, P’s brothers — one of them a murdered gang member — all have criminal histories.

If P is truly accepting responsibility and focusing on “goals and plans,” one would assume that would mean a clean break from the criminal world. Family is family, however, but in this case, the judge wasn’t buying the plan.

Jason van Rassel’s take on a head shop raid: “So much for Super Bong Tuesday.”

One of my favourites ran buried in a hole on B5. A rather inoccuous story that even a funny lede couldn’t propel to the front pages.

Person seen running from motorhome blaze

Tue May 20 2008
Sherri Zickefoose
c Calgary Herald

The conversation with the man in a burning shirt was brief.

“I know,” the young man replied as he was running past a neighbour who pointed out his shirt was trailing smoke.

Arson investigators say the fire that destroyed a boat, trailer and motorhome Monday on Galway Crescent S.W. is suspicious.

They are looking for a man in his late teens seen running from the backyard fire.

“He was seen running in the alley and actually ran past the scene twice,” said Det. Scott Sampson.

Residents first noticed heavy black smoke billowing skyward and called the fire department for help around 8:30 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting up from the backyard.

Fire consumed a boat, trailer, canopy structure, 9.45-metre (31-foot) motorhome and a fence, said Deb Bergeson, spokeswoman for the Calgary Fire Department.

Crews put out the fire out before it could spread to a garage and neighbouring homes.

The damage is estimated at $105,000.

The suspect is described as 17 to 20 years old, Caucasian and was wearing a light checked shirt and black jeans.

He is about five foot four and has a slim build.

Calgary police and arson detectives continue investigating.

Are you a criminology student? Do you have questions? Why yes. Yes, you do.

I am here to answer them as best I can. For those who sat through our Runaway Devil sessions at MRU, thank you for keeping texting to a minimum (or one-handed on your lap. Yes, I saw you. And yes, you saw me checking my blackberry AS I was talking to you. How rude! But we’re even).

Anyhoo, I am here to answer any project questions you may have.

Who do you think is the biggest manipulator? JR or Jeremy?

They’re both masters of manipulation, and we have their texts, letters and emails to show that. JR was more calculating. She lied about her age on various websites where she created her online rebel/sex bomb persona, bucked against rules and lied about it, and ultimately used sex as a weapon to pursuade Jeremy to follow through with her murder plans. She even tricked police detectives for a while at the beginning: “She played me like a fiddle,” admitted Sgt. Chris Sheehan.

Jeremy fulfilled a more benign Svengali role. He was able to sway young girls and troubled boys. He was considered a best friend by all ages, and was willing to please his pals (driving a friend to Leader, Sask., and back, etc). At his command, Kacy Lancaster dropped what she was doing to buy him a pack of cigarettes and deliver them to his trailer home. She cleaned blood from his mother’s truck and destroyed evidence for him. She drove him out of town to help him escape. He secured the affections of young Morgan, who remained at the ready to take all his calls from jail.

Talk about groundhog day:
Another chilling story of a 12-year-old Burlington, Colo., accused of killing his parents and maiming his young siblings Tuesday night.

As with Runaway Devil, there are more questions than answers, and all answers are shocking.
Charles Long, 50, and hsi wife Marilyn Long, 51, were found dead in their home Tuesday night after the 12-year-old boy called 911 to report that three people had been shot, the Denver Post reports here.

A nine-year-old brother and five-year-old sister were also found in the home. The 12-year-old is now being held in juvenile detention on suspicion of murder. Everything old is new again.

Yikes. It’s going to be interesting keeping tabs on this one to see the difference in Canadian and US legal system in action.
